About me

This weblog is a place for expressing random thoughts and professional experiences of Olexandr Melnyk, a 20-year-old flower kid from Ukraine.

Below is a categorised description of his clumsy personality.

Location

Since my birth I live in Lviv (also spelled as L’viv, Lvov, Lwów and Lemberg), a middle-sized city with 735,000 inhabitants. The historic centre of Lviv is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a rather green city compared to other Ukrainian regional centers.

Religion

I am a Christian and a follower of the ahimsa concept, which is practically expressed in myself being a vegetarian.

Politics

I am democratic, libertarian, pragmatic anarcho-pacifist and green, but not a member of any political party. I highly adore Mahatma Gandhi and Ernesto “Che” Guevara.

Linguistics

I am an avid (but not yet fluent) Esperantist and can speak Ukrainian, Russian and English fluently. Ancient languages and writing systems of Eastern peoples are of a huge interest to me.

Programming

I am mostly interested in open source technologies and my main experience lies in the field of databases and web development. For more information about my past projects, check out the projects page.

Science

I’ve participated in a number of contests and science fairs in computer science, mathematics, physics and astronomy when I was in school. During my last year of school, I have qualified to the national programming finals.

Sports

I have trained judo for around five years when I was in school and have a yellow belt. For the past several years, I’ve been enjoying gymnastic excercises and jogging regularly. I have completed a half marathon run on August 1st, 2006 with a time of 1h:56m:41s.

Travelling

I have visited two countries (Slovakia and Austria) so far, during my trip to Summer Esperanto Study. I’ve also been on two Carpathian mountains (both around 1,400m high).
